Day Twelve: One Million Star Hotel

Picture
There is nothing like laying in your tent or hammock staring up at the milky way in the middle of nowhere. It is truly magical and has been the topic for poems, songs, and ballads. It’s inspiring and it feels so good but is something that we just don’t do anymore unless we go backpacking or camping. Sleeping under the stars was part of normal life for most humans in history until just recently. It is another piece of the wild that has so many benefits that we have lost touch with and some of us even fear. In this study, scientists found sleeping outdoors helps with our circadian clock and quality of sleep. Fresh air also has been found to improve body and brain function, including to help break down lactic acid in our bodies faster. So if you did an extra hard work out, you might want to consider sleeping outside for the night. If your home has poor air flow or lack of fresh air, the C02 rich stale air you breathe can slow your metabolism and body functioning according to this research.

Meditation: Listen to this meditation- The Starry Night by The Honest Guys

Activity: Tonight we will sleep under the stars! If this is your first time ever sleeping under the stars you are in for a treat! There might be a level of fear that comes up when you think about sleeping outside and that is normal. Not having your cozy bed and protection of your home may be really intimidating for you but the juice is worth the squeeze. So grab that old tent that has been collecting dust ever since you bought it on sale at the sporting goods store and set it up. You won’t need the rain fly (do this on a night where there is no rain forecasted) and place it wherever you have space even if it’s just on your balcony of your apartment. If you do not own a tent, you can rent one at most sporting good stores, or you can sleep “cowboy style” without a tent. Make the tent as comfortable as possible. If you have a blow up bed, definitely place one in the tent or on the ground where you will be sleeping. If you do not have one, you can use extra blankets and pillows to soften the ground.

Extra tips:
  • Place an extra blanket in the tent in case you get cold.
  •  If you are sleeping without a tent, make sure to use bug netting if bugs are an issue where you live. You can purchase it on Amazon here.
  • Bring a bottle of water with you in case your mouth/throat gets dry from the fresh air.
  • Bring a flashlight with you and leave a door unlocked in case you need to use the restroom in the middle of the night.

Write in your journal the following:
  1. How did sleeping outside feel for you? Did it feel good?
  2. Did you have any fears come up? Are they fears that you can work through?
  3. What review would you give the “One Million Star Hotel”?

Share: Was this your first time sleeping under the stars? Share a photo of your tent/hammock/ cowboy bed in the Facebook group.

Affirmation: Recite the following affirmation out loud: “I am made from stars and am a part of the night sky. By sleeping outside, I am rekindling that connection.”
