Day Twenty-Five: Over The Moon

Picture
Getting back in sync with the moon and its cycles is an amazing way to connect with the wild here on earth and the wild in our cosmos. According to senior curator Dr. Tom White of the Natural History Museum, the moon affects the earth in three main ways:

  1. Tides. The tides are the most dramatic effect of the moon here on earth. According to National Geographic, “the moon's gravitational pull is the primary tidal force. The moon's gravity pulls the ocean toward it during high high tides. During low high tides, the Earth itself is pulled slightly toward the moon, creating high tides on the opposite side of the planet.
  2. Light. Dr. Tom White explains that, “fluctuating light levels reflected by the Moon also have a startling impact on life on Earth. Not only has low lighting led to a number of interesting nocturnal adaptations, but some organisms rely directly on moonlight to navigate and procreate.
  3. Time. Circalunar rhythms, a biorhythm that corresponds with the lunar cycle that is very important to the reproductive cycles of many organisms, especially marine organisms. They are linked to changing levels of moonlight and the tidal cycle, both of which are governed by the phases of the moon. One organism that is reliant upon this rhythm is the great barrier reef.

The legends, folklore, and claims about the moon’s effect on our well-being, emotions, energy, and healing powers are full of magic and wonder. The moon’s energy is an inspiration for manifesting our dreams and desires, letting go of things that do not serve us, and a cause for celebration of all things big and small. While these claims have not been scientifically proven, they have been shared for thousands of years across many civilizations. Even if there is no scientific proof, the belief is there, and your beliefs can shape your reality.

Meditation: Listen to this meditation: Full Moon Infusion by Meg Sangimino

Activity: Take a moonlight bath- with this activity you will be connecting to the moon and it’s magic. The moon inspires us to celebrate our planet, ourselves, and our lives. Choose one thing to celebrate in your life while taking your moonlight bath. It can be something as small as getting out of bed that day or something much bigger, like the moon itself. There are a few different ways to enjoy a moonlight bath. Choose one of the options that calls to you listed below.

  1. Moon Walk- Take a walk under the moon’s light! This is best done when the moon is full so you have the most light. As your eyes get more adjusted to the low light, notice how your surroundings change and look different under the moonlight. Notice the shadows that your body casts as you take your walk. Walk for at least 30 minutes allowing the moon’s light to shine down on your body.
  2. Moon Gaze- Find a place where you can lay down comfortably and be in the moon’s light. You may want to lay a blanket and/or pad down so you can be comfortable while moon gazing. Once you are laying down on your back and are comfortable, gaze up at the moon. Notice the shadows and uneven surface. How bright is the glow? Is it a full moon or just a tint crescent moon? Try to gaze at the moon for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Moon Light- This option can be experienced from inside your home. Find a window that allows the moon’s light to shine in. Place your favorite chair next to the window and turn off any inside lights. Get cozy in your chair and allow the moon’s light to shine on you. Bask in the glow for at least 30 minutes.

Write in your journal the following:
  1. How did you feel connecting to the moon?
  2. What aspects of your moonlight bath did you enjoy?
  3. What did the moon inspire you to celebrate?

Share: Share about your moonlight bath and how it made you feel in the Facebook group.

Affirmation: Recite the following affirmation out loud: “I am open to being inspired by the moon’s energy to celebrate all the god that comes into my life.”
